Ricardo Rocha was born in Mexico City in 1937. In the 1960s and 1970s he he was a part of the Suma Group, which included Gabriel Macotela, Mario Rangel, Oliverio Hinojosa and Santiago Rebolledo, among others. This group proposed taking art to the streets with the use of popular graphics. This collective arose from the Academia de San Carlos, in the National School of Plastic Arts and their goal was to go to city walls, create prints, posters and publish books, creating art based on urban themes. Rocha was a teacher in the National School at the UNAM, National University in Mexico City for 15 years and influenced his students as a founder of the Suma group, which continued to be active through 1980. In 1980, he left the city for a peaceful life of painting in Jocotitlán, state of Mexico. He is known for his drawings that use calligraphic images, and, later in life, he painted abstract landscapes and window-themed works. In 2006, he created a piece using an old photograph of his parents, titled “Personal Archaeology,” which was exhibited at La Pinacoteca Universitaria in the University of Colima. This was his last exposition. He died in Comala, Colima, in 2008.

Ricardo Rocha nació en la Ciudad de México en 1937. En los años de los sesentas y los setentas él fue integrante del grupo Suma, el cual incluyó a Gabriel Macotela, Mario Rangel, Oliverio Hinojosa y Santiago Rebolledo, entre otros, que proponía llevar arte a la calle con el uso de gráficas populares. Esta colectiva surgió en la Academia de San Carlos en al Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas y su meta era crear arte basada en temas urbanos en los muros, produciendo estampas, carteles y publicando libros. Rocha fue maestro en la UNAM por quince años y fue influyente con sus estudiantes como fundador del grupo Suma quienes estuvieron activos durante la década de los setentas hasta 1980. En 1980 dejó la ciudad y se mudó a Jocotitlán, Estado de México donde se dedicó a la vida calmada de un pintor. Es conocido por sus dibujos que utilizan imágenes caligráficos y mas tarde in su vida por sus pinturas de paisajes abstractos y otros con el tema de ventanas. En 2006 creó su última exhibición usando una fotografía antigua de sus padres, llamado “arqueología personal”, que se exhibió en la Pinacoteca Universitaria en la Universidad de Colima. Fue su última exposición. Murió en Comala, Colima en 2008.
