Luis Díaz is considered one of the most versatile artists from Central America and has been recognized for his work many times in his native Guatemala, where he was born in the capital in 1939. He was trained as an architect in the University of San Carlos of Guatemala between 1959 and 1961. In 1961 he left his architectural studies and co-founded the Daniel Schaefer gallery in 1964, and also in the same year showed his work at the World’s Fair in New York City at the Central American Pavilion. Internationally he has shown works in Brazil, Colombia, Venice, Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, France, Chile, Italy and his native country. He has also served as artistic consultant for architectural designs for many major buildings in Guatemala, including University of San Carlos. He has been recognized for his contributions by winning prizes including First Place for painting in Costa Rica at the Bienal I and Grand Latin American Prize at Sao Paulo XI bienal, both in 1971. Most recently he was awarded the Carlos Mérida Prize (Mérida was a Guatemalan artist, 1891-1985, who was one of the first to fuse European modern painting to Latin American themes, contemporary of Diego Rivera) in November 2018 for his contributions to Guatemalan culture. His work includes architectural design, murals, mosaics, engravings, drawings, paintings, and sculpture.

Luis Díaz es considerado uno de los artistas más versátiles centroamericanos y ha sido reconocido varias veces en su país de Guatemala donde nació en la capital en 1939. Estudió la arquitectura en la Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala de 1959-1961. En 1961 dejó sus estudios y co-fundó la Galería Daniel Schaefer en 1964 y en ese año también expone en La Feria Mundial en Nueva York en el Pabellón Centroamericano. Internacionalmente ha tenido exposiciones en Brasil, Colombia, Venecia, España, México, Puerto Rico, Francia, Chile, Italia y su país nativo. También ha sido consultante artístico en varios diseños arquitectónicos en Guatemala incluyendo la Universidad de San Carlos. Ha sido reconocido por sus contibuciones ganando premios incluyendo primer premio de Pintura en La Bienal I de Costa Rica y el Gran Premio Latinoamericano en la XI Beinal en Sao Paulo.
