Alfredo Castañeda was born in Mexico City February 18, 1938, into a family of artists. As a teenager he studied with Spanish artist Jorge Bardasano, who was an exile from the Spanish Civil War and developed an interest in poetry and literature along with visual art. He studied architecture at the UNAM, or University of Mexico, and was influenced during these years by German architect, painter and sculptor Matías Goeritz, who designed the famous Torres de Satélite in Mexico City. He adopted a vision that included the poetic, the philosophic, the spacial and the magical. In 1964, he received the title of architect but dedicated himself to full-time painting by 1969 and soon was presenting oils, acrylics, drawings and collages in galleries in Mexico, New York, Germany and Los Angeles from 1969-1983. In 1991, he moved with his family to Madrid, Spain and continued to show his work there and in New York, El Salvador and Mexico. His style is described as surrealist fantastic art. He creates imaginary characters, usually older adults with profound staring gazes reflecting mysticism, introversion, reflection and melancholy. Castañeda was taken by mystical texts and and his artistic characters are solemn but not without a dry humor. He died in Madrid on December 15, 2010.

Alfredo Castañeda nació en la Ciudad de México febrero 18, 1938, rodeado de una familia artística. Cuando era adolescente estudió con el artista español, Jorge Bardasano, quien había sido exiliado a México después de la Guerra Civil Española. Estudió arquitectura en la UNAM y durante esa época fue influenciado por el arquitecto, pintor y escultor alemán, Matías Goerlitz, famoso por su diseño de las Torres de Satélite en la Ciudad de México. Adoptó una visión que incluía lo poético, lo filosófico, lo espacial y lo mágico. En 1964 recibió el título de Arquitecto pero en 1969 se dedicó a ser pintor y entre 1969-1983 presenta obras de óleo, acrílica y collage in galerías de México, Nueva York, Alemania y Los Angeles. En 1991 se traslada con su familia a Madrid, España y continúa presentando obras allí y en Nueva York, El Salvador y México. Su estilo se describe como surrealismo fantástico. Crea personajes imaginarios, usualmente gente madura con miradas profundas refleccionando el misticismo, introversión, reflexión y melancolía. Castañeda fue amante de la lectura mística y sus personajes artísticos son solemnes pero con un sentido del humor. El murió en Madrid diciember 15 de 2010.
